Known for: Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, co-CEO of DC Studios

James Gunn is an American filmmaker, screenwriter and studio executive known for his work in superhero cinema. After building a career across independent and studio films, he became a leading creative voice at both Marvel Studios and DC, and he now oversees DC's film and television output as co-chairman and co-chief executive of DC Studios.

Early life

James Francis Gunn was born on August 5, 1966, in St. Louis, Missouri. He developed an early interest in writing and filmmaking and made amateur films as a young person. He pursued writing professionally, including a novel, before entering the film industry.

Career

Gunn began his screen career at the low-budget studio Troma Entertainment, where he gained experience in writing and production. He went on to write mainstream films including the live-action Scooby-Doo movies and the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead. He made his feature directorial debut with the horror-comedy Slither in 2006 and followed it with the dark superhero film Super in 2010.

His career reached a new level when he wrote and directed Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel Studios in 2014, a commercial and critical success that introduced a relatively obscure group of characters to mainstream audiences and became a cornerstone of its shared cinematic universe. He directed two sequels, released in 2017 and 2023, completing a trilogy that was praised for its blend of action, comedy and emotional depth. He also began working with DC, directing The Suicide Squad in 2021 and creating and directing the spin-off television series Peacemaker, which expanded his presence across both major superhero franchises.

Recent work

In 2022 Gunn was appointed co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios alongside producer Peter Safran, taking charge of a long-term plan to unify DC's films, television series, animation and video games under a single creative vision. As part of this initiative he wrote and directed a new Superman film, released in 2025, intended to launch the rebooted DC universe and serve as the foundation for a slate of interconnected projects. Gunn is known for blending humour, emotional, character-driven storytelling and distinctive needle-drop soundtrack choices, often centred on misfit or unconventional characters. His transition from independent and studio filmmaker to studio leadership has made him a central figure in the direction of contemporary superhero franchises, and his hands-on involvement as both writer-director and executive has drawn considerable attention within the film industry. He has also continued to work as a producer on projects connected to the broader DC slate.
