Wagner Moura is a Brazilian actor and filmmaker who became one of his country's most recognizable screen presences before building an international career in film and television. He is widely known for his lead role in the Brazilian crime drama "Elite Squad" and its sequel, and for portraying the Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar in the Netflix series "Narcos."
Early life
Moura was born on June 27, 1976, in Rodelas, in the northeastern Brazilian state of Bahia, and grew up in the state capital, Salvador. He studied journalism at the Federal University of Bahia, where he also became involved in theatre. He began his performing career on the stage and in regional productions before moving into Brazilian cinema and television, gradually establishing himself through a series of well-received roles.
Career
Moura gained national prominence in Brazilian cinema during the 2000s, appearing in films that drew attention at home and abroad. His breakthrough came with the role of Captain Nascimento in "Elite Squad" (Tropa de Elite, 2007), directed by José Padilha, and he reprised the part in the 2010 sequel, one of the highest-grossing Brazilian films. He worked steadily across genres in Brazilian features and series, earning a reputation as a versatile and committed performer.
His international profile expanded significantly when he was cast as Pablo Escobar in "Narcos" (2015), Netflix's drama about the Medellín cartel. The role, performed largely in Spanish, brought him global recognition and a Golden Globe nomination. He went on to appear in English-language productions, broadening his range across Hollywood and independent projects. In 2025 he starred in "The Secret Agent" (O Agente Secreto), directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, a performance that won the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival and was widely praised by critics.
