Known for: High School Musical, Hairspray, The Greatest Showman, The Iron Claw

Zac Efron is an American actor who rose to fame as a teen idol through the "High School Musical" franchise before broadening his work into musicals, comedies and dramatic roles. Over the course of his career he has moved deliberately away from his early image, taking on physically demanding and darker parts while also hosting and producing documentary content.

Early life

Zachary David Alexander Efron was born in San Luis Obispo, California, in 1987 and grew up in nearby Arroyo Grande. He became involved in theatre as a child, performing in community and school productions, and took singing lessons. Encouraged by his parents, he pursued acting seriously while still in high school and worked with a talent agent in Los Angeles. He began auditioning for television and film roles in the early 2000s, appearing in series such as "Summerland" and making guest appearances on shows including "ER" and "The Guardian" before his breakthrough.

Career

Efron gained worldwide recognition in 2006 with the Disney Channel television film "High School Musical," in which he played Troy Bolton. The film and its sequels became a cultural phenomenon and made him a leading teen star. He capitalized on this success with a starring role in the film adaptation of the musical "Hairspray" (2007) and reprised his role in "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" (2008), the franchise's theatrical entry.

Seeking to expand beyond musicals, he took roles in films including "17 Again" (2009), "Charlie St. Cloud" (2010) and the ensemble romance "New Year's Eve" (2011). He moved into adult comedy with "Neighbors" (2014) and its sequel, and appeared in "Baywatch" (2017) and the musical "The Greatest Showman" (2017), in which he sang alongside Hugh Jackman and Zendaya.

Recent work

Efron took on more dramatic and varied material in subsequent years. He played serial killer Ted Bundy in "Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile" (2019) and hosted the Netflix travel and sustainability series "Down to Earth with Zac Efron." In 2023 he received some of the strongest reviews of his career for his portrayal of wrestler Kevin Von Erich in "The Iron Claw," a drama about the Von Erich wrestling family, for which he underwent a significant physical transformation. He also led the comedy "Ricky Stanicky" (2024) and appeared in the family drama "A Family Affair" (2024). Beyond acting, Efron has pursued interests in food, travel and wellness, and has spoken publicly about adopting a healthier approach to his career and personal life. He has continued to balance commercial projects with more character-driven roles, gradually reshaping public perception of him from a teen heartthrob into a more versatile leading man.
