Madonna
Singer & songwriter
Madonna, born Madonna Louise Ciccone, is an American singer, songwriter and performer widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of popular music. Often called the "Queen of Pop," she is known for continually reinventing her image and sound and for her impact on music, fashion and the broader culture over several decades.
Early life
Madonna was born in 1958 in Bay City, Michigan, and grew up in the Detroit area in a large Italian-American family. The death of her mother when Madonna was young has been described as a formative influence on her. After studying dance and briefly attending university on a dance scholarship, she moved to New York City to pursue a career in performance, working in dance and in several bands before securing a recording contract. Her early experiences in New York's club and downtown music scene shaped the dance-oriented pop that would define her initial success.
Career
Madonna's self-titled debut album in the early 1980s produced a series of hit singles, and her second album, "Like a Virgin," propelled her to international stardom. Over the following years she released a string of commercially and critically successful albums, including "True Blue," "Like a Prayer" and "Ray of Light," the last of which marked a celebrated reinvention toward electronic music. Her singles, among them "Vogue," "Material Girl," "Like a Prayer" and "Hung Up," became defining pop songs of their eras.
Beyond recording, Madonna became known for elaborate, boundary-pushing live tours and music videos that frequently engaged with themes of sexuality, religion and identity, sometimes generating significant controversy and public debate. Her concert tours set commercial records and were noted for their ambitious staging, choreography and theatricality. She also pursued acting, appearing in films including the musical "Evita," for which she received a Golden Globe Award, as well as roles in "Desperately Seeking Susan" and "A League of Their Own." She built business ventures spanning publishing, fashion and film production, and her sustained commercial success made her one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
Recent work
Madonna has continued to record, tour and explore new creative directions in later decades. In the 2020s she undertook a major retrospective concert tour celebrating her four-decade career, performing to large audiences around the world. She has also been recognized with numerous honours, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and remains a frequent point of reference for later generations of pop performers who cite her as a foundational influence on the modern pop star as both musician and cultural figure.
