Becky G
Singer & actress
Becky G, born Rebbeca Marie Gomez, is an American singer, songwriter and actress known for moving fluidly between English-language pop and Spanish-language Latin music. She first reached a wide audience as a teenager in the early 2010s and later became one of the more prominent Mexican-American artists working in reggaeton and Latin pop.
Early life
Becky G was born on March 2, 1997, in Inglewood, California, and raised in nearby Moreno Valley. She grew up in a Mexican-American household and has spoken about the family's financial struggles during her childhood, which at one point led them to live with relatives. She began performing and posting cover videos online as a child, building an early following before signing with a major label as a teenager.
Career
Becky G's breakthrough came in 2014 with the single "Shower," a pop song that became a substantial hit on the US charts and established her as a young crossover artist. After releasing further English-language material, she shifted increasingly toward Spanish-language music in the mid-2010s, a move that broadened her audience across Latin America and among Latino listeners in the United States.
Her Spanish-language singles "Sola," "Mayores" (featuring Bad Bunny) and "Sin Pijama" (with Natti Natasha) became widely streamed reggaeton and Latin pop tracks, with "Sin Pijama" in particular becoming one of her signature songs. In 2019 she released her debut studio album "Mala Santa," which consolidated her standing in the Latin music market. She followed it with "Esquemas" in 2022.
Alongside her music, Becky G has worked as an actress. She appeared in the 2017 film "Power Rangers" as Trini, the Yellow Ranger, and has taken on other screen and voice roles, including voice work in animated projects. She has also served as a coach and mentor on televised singing competitions and has been involved in beauty and fashion brand ventures, launching her own product lines and partnering with major companies. Throughout her career she has spoken openly about her Mexican-American identity, mental health and the experience of growing up in a working-class family, themes that have resonated with much of her audience.
Recent work
Becky G has continued releasing music that balances mainstream pop collaborations with regional Mexican and Latin styles, exploring genres such as música mexicana on later projects. She has used these releases to highlight traditional Mexican musical forms while reaching contemporary streaming audiences, and she has performed at major festivals and award shows around the world. She remains a visible figure in the contemporary Latin pop scene, frequently collaborating with other prominent Spanish-language artists and appearing on high-profile soundtracks and singles. Her career is often cited as an example of a young Latina performer who built a bilingual catalogue and used it to reach audiences on both sides of the language divide, and she has received numerous nominations and awards recognizing her contributions to Latin music. Beyond performing, she has been active in philanthropic and advocacy work focused on Latino communities and young women, reinforcing her role as a public figure as well as a recording artist.
