Early life

Björk Guðmundsdóttir was born on November 21, 1965, in Reykjavík, Iceland. She showed musical ability as a child and studied music, and she released a record of cover versions and original material in Iceland while still very young. As a teenager and young adult she performed in several Icelandic bands across punk and alternative styles before achieving wider attention.

Career

Björk first reached international audiences as the singer of The Sugarcubes, an Icelandic alternative rock band that gained attention in the late 1980s. After the group disbanded, she launched a solo career that established her as a singular voice in 1990s music. Her solo albums "Debut" and "Post" combined dance and electronic production with her unconventional songwriting and earned critical acclaim and commercial success.

Later albums such as "Homogenic," "Vespertine" and "Medúlla" pushed her work further toward orchestral, electronic and experimental territory, frequently exploring new recording techniques and unusual instrumentation.
