Arnel Pineda
Singer
Arnel Pineda is a Filipino singer best known as the lead vocalist of the American rock band Journey, a position he reached after the group discovered him through online videos. His story, rising from hardship in the Philippines to fronting one of the world's most popular rock bands, made him an internationally recognized figure.
Early life
Pineda was born on September 5, 1967, in Manila, Philippines. He faced significant hardship in his youth, including periods of homelessness following the death of his mother, and he began singing in local bands as a teenager to support himself. He developed his vocal abilities performing covers of rock and pop hits in clubs across the Philippines and abroad.
Career
For years Pineda performed with cover and original bands in the Philippines and in other parts of Asia, building a regional following. His career changed dramatically when Journey guitarist Neal Schon discovered videos of Pineda performing Journey songs with his band The Zoo on the video-sharing site YouTube. After an audition, Pineda was invited to join Journey in 2007 as its new lead singer, taking on a role long associated with the band's classic frontman Steve Perry.
Recent work
Pineda made his recorded debut with Journey on the 2008 album Revelation and has toured extensively with the band around the world in the years since, performing the group's well-known catalog including songs such as "Don't Stop Believin'." His unlikely journey was chronicled in the documentary film Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey, which brought wider attention to his life story. He has also continued to release solo music and remains a celebrated figure in the Philippines, where he is regarded as a national source of pride. He continues to perform as Journey's lead vocalist on the band's tours. With Pineda as frontman, Journey released the studio albums Revelation, Eclipse and Freedom and continued to perform to large audiences worldwide. In 2017 Journey was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Pineda performed with the band at the induction ceremony alongside members of its classic lineup. Before joining Journey he had fronted a number of bands in the Philippines and toured across Asia, building the experience that prepared him for the international stage. He has continued to release solo material in addition to his work with Journey, and his rags-to-riches story has made him an enduring symbol of perseverance and an inspiration to fans in the Philippines and beyond.
