Known for: "Envolver", "Show das Poderosas", Brazilian funk and Latin pop

Anitta is a Brazilian singer, songwriter and businesswoman who became one of the most internationally recognized artists to emerge from Brazil. Working across Brazilian funk, pop and Latin genres, and singing in Portuguese, Spanish and English, she helped bring Brazilian pop music to a global audience.

Early life

Born Larissa de Macedo Machado on March 30, 1993, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, she grew up in the Honorio Gurgel neighborhood in the city's working-class North Zone. She sang in a church choir as a child and adopted the stage name Anitta early in her career. She began posting music online and performing locally before signing with a major label.

Career

Anitta broke through in Brazil in 2013 with the single "Show das Poderosas," which became a national hit and established her as a leading figure in Brazilian funk and pop. She released a string of successful albums and singles throughout the 2010s and increasingly recorded in Spanish and English to expand her reach across Latin America and beyond, collaborating with artists from the reggaeton and pop worlds. She built a reputation as a savvy entrepreneur, managing her image and business interests closely.

Recent work

Her international profile rose sharply with the 2022 single "Envolver," which became a global streaming hit and made her, by various accounts, the first solo Brazilian artist to reach the top of the Spotify Global chart. The success of the song and her album Versions of Me brought her wider recognition, and she received a Grammy Award nomination for Best New Artist. She has continued to release multilingual music, appear at major international festivals and pursue ventures in branding and media, positioning herself as a leading ambassador for Brazilian music on the world stage. Anitta has performed at major international festivals, including Coachella, and has collaborated with global artists such as Madonna on the single "Faz Gostoso," as well as with figures from the reggaeton and pop worlds. Her album Kisses earned a Latin Grammy nomination, and she has continued to release projects exploring her Brazilian funk roots, including the album Funk Generation. Beyond music she has expanded into branding, television and business ventures, and she has used her prominence to highlight Brazilian culture and to engage in social and political causes in her home country, cementing her status as one of Latin America's most recognizable contemporary entertainers. Singing fluently in several languages, she has frequently described her ambition to bring Brazilian rhythms to a worldwide audience, and her crossover success has opened doors for other artists from Brazil seeking international careers.
