Early life
Bassett was born on August 16, 1958, in New York City and was raised primarily in St. Petersburg, Florida. A strong student, she attended Yale University, earning an undergraduate degree, and continued at the Yale School of Drama, where she received a master's degree in fine arts. Career
After supporting roles in films including Boyz n the Hood and Malcolm X, Bassett earned widespread recognition for playing Tina Turner in the 1993 biographical drama What's Love Got to Do with It, a performance that won her a Golden Globe Award and brought an Academy Award nomination.
