Kirsten Dunst
Actress
Kirsten Dunst is an American actress whose career began in childhood and has spanned blockbuster franchises, prestige independent films and acclaimed television. She is known for combining mainstream success with a steady stream of artistically ambitious work with auteur directors.
Early life
Dunst was born in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, and later moved with her family to Los Angeles. She began modeling and acting as a young child, appearing in commercials before transitioning to film roles. Her family background is part German, and she has held both American and German citizenship. She balanced early acting work with her schooling in California.
Career
Dunst achieved early prominence as a child actress with a striking supporting performance in the 1994 gothic drama Interview with the Vampire, in which she played a vampire child alongside major stars, a role that earned her significant praise. The same year she appeared in the family adventure film Jumanji. As a teenager she continued to work steadily, and in 1999 she starred in Sofia Coppola's debut feature The Virgin Suicides, beginning a fruitful collaboration with the director.
She reached global fame in the early 2000s as Mary Jane Watson, the love interest of the title character, in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, which became enormously successful at the box office. Alongside the franchise she pursued varied roles, reuniting with Coppola for the historical drama Marie Antoinette and appearing in films such as Bring It On and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Her performance in Lars von Trier's Melancholia earned her the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival, marking a high point of critical recognition. Throughout this period she moved deliberately between large commercial projects and smaller, director-driven films, building a reputation as an actress unafraid of challenging or unglamorous material.
Recent work
Dunst broadened her range with acclaimed television work, earning praise and award nominations for her role in the second season of the anthology series Fargo. She continued to choose distinctive projects, including the period drama The Beguiled and Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog, the latter earning her an Academy Award nomination. She has also taken leading roles in contemporary films exploring war and society, including a journalist in a film about a fractured United States, and she reunited with Sofia Coppola on later projects. She produced as well as starred in several of her more recent endeavors, deepening her involvement behind the scenes. Married to fellow actor Jesse Plemons, Dunst is regarded as a respected and selective performer who has sustained a long career across genres and eras.
