Kevin Bacon
Actor
Kevin Bacon is an American actor whose film and television career spans more than four decades. Known for his range across dramas, thrillers and comedies, he became a cultural reference point through the game "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon," which playfully measures how closely other performers are connected to him through shared film credits.
Early life
Bacon was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the youngest of six children. His father was a prominent urban planner and his mother was a teacher and activist. Drawn to acting early, Bacon left home as a teenager to pursue theater in New York, studying and working in the city's stage scene before transitioning to film.
Career
Bacon made an early film appearance in Animal House and gained wider notice in the ensemble drama Diner. His breakthrough as a leading man came with the 1984 musical drama Footloose, in which he played a teenager who challenges a town's ban on dancing; the role made him a star. Rather than remaining a teen idol, he deliberately pursued varied and often character-driven parts throughout the following years.
He delivered notable performances in a string of acclaimed films, including Oliver Stone's JFK, the courtroom drama A Few Good Men, the space mission drama Apollo 13, and the crime drama Mystic River, the last of which was widely praised. He also showed a talent for genre work, anchoring the cult monster film Tremors and appearing in thrillers such as The River Wild and Sleepers. His willingness to take supporting and villainous roles helped him sustain a long and varied career, and he earned particular acclaim for playing complex, morally ambiguous characters. He also took occasional turns toward directing and earned awards recognition, including a Golden Globe for a television film, demonstrating range well beyond his early image as a teen idol.
Recent work
In later years Bacon moved fluidly between film and television. He starred as a relentless FBI agent in the thriller series The Following and appeared in the superhero film X-Men: First Class as the antagonist Sebastian Shaw. He has continued to take on film and streaming projects across genres, including horror and dark comedy, and has earned recognition for his television work. Bacon is also a musician, performing for many years in a band with his brother. He has spoken candidly about losing much of his savings in a major financial fraud and about rebuilding his career through steady work. Married to the actress Kyra Sedgwick, with whom he has occasionally collaborated, he is regarded as one of Hollywood's most durable and adaptable character leads.
