Rachel Zegler is an American actress and singer who rose to prominence with her film debut as Maria in Steven Spielberg's 2021 adaptation of "West Side Story." Praised for her vocal ability and screen presence, she became one of the most discussed young performers in Hollywood, going on to lead major studio productions.

Early life

Zegler was born in Hackensack, New Jersey, and raised in the nearby town of Clifton. Of Colombian and Polish descent, she became involved in musical theatre from a young age, performing in local and school productions. She built an early following by posting song covers online, which showcased the vocal range that would later define much of her work. Her breakthrough came when she was cast in "West Side Story" after an open casting call, while she was still a teenager.

Career

Her performance as Maria in "West Side Story" earned widespread acclaim, and she received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, becoming one of the youngest recipients in that category. The role established her as both an actress and a singer capable of carrying a large-scale musical film. She followed it with a supporting part in the superhero sequel "Shazam! Fury of the Gods."

Zegler took on a leading role in "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes," the prequel to the popular film franchise, playing the singer Lucy Gray Baird. The role allowed her to combine acting and musical performance, and the film was a commercial success. She has also been active in theatre and live performance, contributing songs to soundtracks and appearing at major events.

Recent work

Zegler starred as the title character in Walt Disney Pictures' live-action adaptation of "Snow White," released in 2025, a high-profile project that placed her at the centre of significant public attention. She has continued to pursue stage work alongside film, including a leading role in a West End production of "Evita" in London. Known for her openness on social media and her advocacy on various issues, Zegler has remained a prominent figure among younger performers transitioning between screen and stage. Her rapid rise placed her among a new generation of performers equally comfortable in acting and singing, and she has used her musical background across film soundtracks and live appearances. She has been open about the pressures of early fame and has spoken candidly in interviews about navigating public scrutiny. Balancing screen roles with theatre, she has continued to seek projects that draw on both her dramatic and vocal abilities as she builds a career spanning film, music and the stage.
