Actress & entrepreneur
Kate Hudson is an American actress and entrepreneur best known for her breakthrough role in the music drama Almost Famous and for a string of romantic comedies in the 2000s. The daughter of actress Goldie Hawn, she established herself as a leading screen performer before expanding into business with the activewear brand Fabletics.
Hudson was born on 19 April 1979 in Los Angeles, California. Her mother is the actress Goldie Hawn and her biological father is the musician and comedian Bill Hudson; she was raised largely by Hawn and her longtime partner, the actor Kurt Russell, whom Hudson has often credited as a father figure. Growing up in a show-business family, she was exposed to filmmaking from an early age and began pursuing acting after finishing high school.
Hudson's career-defining role came in Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous (2000), in which she played Penny Lane, a free-spirited member of a 1970s rock entourage. The performance earned her widespread acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She followed it with a run of popular romantic comedies, most notably How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days opposite Matthew McConaughey, which became one of her signature films.
Through the 2000s and 2010s she appeared in films across genres, including Raising Helen, Fool's Gold, Bride Wars and the musical Nine, as well as various ensemble projects. While her romantic comedies brought her broad commercial visibility, she also took on dramatic and musical roles that showcased a wider range, and she became a fixture of the romantic-comedy genre during its commercial peak. Her on-screen persona, often combining warmth and comic timing, made her one of the most recognisable leading actresses of the period.
Over time Hudson balanced acting with a growing interest in business and wellness. She cultivated a public profile centred on fitness, family and lifestyle, which she would later channel into commercial ventures. Throughout her career she remained a frequent subject of entertainment media, both for her film work and for her high-profile family background.
Beyond acting, Hudson became a prominent entrepreneur, co-founding the subscription activewear company Fabletics, which grew into a major brand in the fitness-apparel market and significantly broadened her public profile. She has also pursued music, releasing her debut studio album as a singer in the 2020s, a project that marked a notable expansion of her creative output. In addition she has continued to take on film and television roles, including parts in ensemble features and streaming productions. She remains a familiar presence in popular culture, balancing acting, business and lifestyle ventures while frequently appearing in coverage of her family and career.
