Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Actor & filmmaker
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is an American actor and filmmaker known for moving from a successful childhood and teen television career into a respected body of work in independent and studio films. He is recognised for his versatility across comedy, drama and science fiction, as well as for founding the online collaborative media company HitRecord.
Early life
Gordon-Levitt was born on 17 February 1981 in Los Angeles, California. He began acting as a child, appearing in commercials and television before landing the role that brought him early fame. He took a break from acting to study at Columbia University, an experience he has cited as broadening his interests beyond performing, before returning to the industry with a focus on more independent and creatively ambitious projects. During his teenage years he balanced schooling with regular television work, an upbringing that gave him extensive experience on set from a young age.
Career
Gordon-Levitt first became widely known as Tommy Solomon in the long-running NBC sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun. His transition to adult film roles was marked by a series of independent dramas, including Mysterious Skin and the noir-influenced Brick, which helped reshape his image away from his sitcom origins. He reached a wider audience with the romantic comedy-drama 500 Days of Summer. He went on to appear in major studio productions, including Christopher Nolan's Inception and The Dark Knight Rises, the time-travel thriller Looper, and the biographical comedy-drama The Walk. His performances in films such as 50/50 and Steven Spielberg's Lincoln further established his reputation for combining commercial appeal with dramatic depth.
In 2013 he made his feature directorial debut with Don Jon, which he also wrote and starred in. Alongside acting he developed HitRecord, an open collaborative production company he expanded with his brother, designed to enable collaborative creative projects across film, music and other media, reflecting his interest in participatory and community-driven art. The venture also produced television work that earned industry recognition.
Recent work
Gordon-Levitt has continued to balance acting with producing and other creative ventures. He portrayed Edward Snowden in the biographical film Snowden and appeared in a range of film and television projects, including the dramatised account The Trial of the Chicago 7 and streaming features such as Project Power. He has also taken on roles in television series for streaming platforms. He remains active as both a performer and a creative entrepreneur, frequently taking on roles that allow him to explore character-driven storytelling while continuing to support collaborative media work.
