Jordan Peele is an American filmmaker, comedian, and actor who first became known for sketch comedy and later established himself as a leading writer and director of socially conscious horror films. He won an Academy Award for writing his directorial debut, Get Out, and has continued to produce and direct films and television under his production company.

Early life

Peele was born on February 21, 1979, in New York City and grew up in Manhattan. He developed an early interest in comedy and performance, attending college before leaving to pursue comedy full-time. He honed his skills in improv and sketch comedy, working in comedy troupes and gradually moving into television.

Career

Peele gained wide recognition as a cast member of the sketch series MADtv, where he spent several seasons and developed a reputation for impressions and original characters. He later partnered with fellow performer Keegan-Michael Key to create and star in the sketch comedy series Key & Peele, which ran on Comedy Central and became known for its inventive, cinematic sketches and cultural commentary. The duo also collaborated on the film Keanu.

Peele made a dramatic shift into filmmaking with his 2017 directorial debut Get Out, a horror-thriller that combined genre filmmaking with social commentary on race in America. The film was a major critical and commercial success, made on a modest budget, and earned him the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay along with additional nominations, making him a prominent voice in contemporary horror. He followed with Us in 2019, starring Lupita Nyong'o, and Nope in 2022, starring Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer, both of which he wrote and directed, continuing his focus on ambitious, idea-driven horror with large commercial releases.

Recent work

Through his production company, Monkeypaw Productions, Peele has produced a range of films and television projects, including a revival of the anthology series The Twilight Zone, which he hosted and narrated, and the acclaimed, award-nominated historical horror series Lovecraft Country. He has produced features by other directors, among them the horror film Candyman, helping to support and elevate new voices in the genre. He has continued to develop his own directorial projects while championing work that emphasizes genre storytelling and underrepresented perspectives. Married to comedian and writer Chelsea Peretti, Peele remains one of the most influential figures in modern American horror cinema, frequently credited with helping revitalize the genre and elevate its critical standing.
