Known for: Illmatic, It Was Written, Stillmatic, King's Disease

Nas, born Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones, is an American rapper, songwriter and entrepreneur widely regarded as one of the most influential and skilled lyricists in the history of hip hop. His debut album is frequently cited as a landmark of the genre, and across a long career he has remained a respected figure known for vivid storytelling and dense, literary rhyming.

Early life

Nas was born on September 14, 1973, in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up primarily in the Queensbridge housing projects in Queens, one of the largest public housing developments in the United States. His father, Olu Dara, was a jazz and blues musician, and Nas was immersed in music from childhood. He left formal schooling early and immersed himself in the local hip hop scene, honing his writing and developing the detailed, observational style that would define his work.

Career

Nas drew early notice through guest appearances before releasing his debut album, "Illmatic," in 1994. Built on production from several of the era's leading producers, the record was praised for its precise lyricism and unflinching portraits of life in Queensbridge, and it has come to be regarded as one of the greatest hip hop albums ever made. He followed it with "It Was Written" (1996), which expanded his commercial reach and included widely heard singles.

Through the late 1990s and 2000s Nas remained a central figure in the genre. He engaged in a celebrated and closely followed rivalry with another leading rapper, releasing pointed records during the dispute, and he continued to put out commercially and critically successful albums, including "Stillmatic," "God's Son" and "Hip Hop Is Dead." His releases often combined personal reflection with social and political commentary.

Recent work

In later years Nas experienced a notable creative resurgence through a series of albums in the "King's Disease" project, produced in collaboration with the producer Hit-Boy. The collaboration was warmly received and brought him significant awards recognition, including a Grammy Award, decades into his career. He has continued to release new music at a steady pace.

Beyond music, Nas has built a substantial business profile as an investor, backing numerous technology and consumer startups through venture activity, and has been involved in media and entertainment ventures. Regularly ranked among the most important and respected artists in hip hop, Nas is recognized both for the enduring influence of his early work and for his sustained relevance as a recording artist and businessman.
