Ciara Princess Wilson, known professionally by her first name Ciara, is an American singer, songwriter and dancer who rose to prominence in the mid-2000s with a blend of R&B, pop and crunk-influenced production. Her early commercial success and choreography-driven performances established her as one of the defining urban-pop artists of the decade.

Early life

Ciara was born on October 25, 1985, in Austin, Texas. Because her father served in the United States Army, her family moved frequently during her childhood, living in various locations across the United States and abroad before eventually settling in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. She developed an interest in singing and dance as a teenager and joined a girl group before pursuing a solo career and signing a recording and songwriting deal.

Career

Ciara released her debut studio album, "Goodies," in 2004. The album's title track became a number-one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100, and follow-up singles "1, 2 Step" and "Oh" reinforced her standing as a leading new voice in R&B and pop. Her work in this period earned her the nickname "First Lady of Crunk&B," referencing the fusion of crunk and contemporary R&B that characterized her early sound.

She continued with the albums "Ciara: The Evolution" (2006), which featured the single "Promise," and "Fantasy Ride" (2009). In 2006 she won a Grammy Award for her collaboration with Missy Elliott on "Lose Control." Later releases included "Basic Instinct" (2010) and the self-titled "Ciara" (2013), which produced the single "Body Party." Throughout her career she has been noted for elaborate, dance-heavy music videos and live performances.

Recent work

In 2018 Ciara released the single "Level Up," which became associated with a widely shared dance challenge and renewed mainstream attention. She followed with the album "Beauty Marks" in 2019, released through her own label arrangement. In addition to music, she has pursued ventures in fashion and entrepreneurship and has appeared in television and film projects.

Ciara married NFL quarterback Russell Wilson in 2016, and the couple have become a prominent public family, frequently appearing together at sporting and charitable events. She has continued to record and perform while balancing business and family commitments, maintaining a presence in popular music more than two decades after her debut.

In her personal life, Ciara has a son from a previous relationship and children with Wilson, and she has spoken publicly about balancing motherhood with her career. She has also pursued acting and modeling work, taken on fashion and fragrance ventures, and continued to tour internationally. Across her career she has been credited with helping shape dance-oriented pop and R&B, and her choreography and visual presentation have been cited as influences by a number of later performers, cementing her reputation as a multifaceted entertainer.
