Jürgen Klopp
Football manager
Jürgen Klopp is a German football manager known for his high-energy, high-pressing style of play often described as "gegenpressing," as well as for his charismatic public persona. He has won major honours in Germany and England and is regarded as one of the most successful and influential managers of his generation.
Early life
Klopp was born on 16 June 1967 in Stuttgart, Germany. He spent the bulk of his playing career at Mainz 05, primarily as a defender or midfielder in the lower divisions of German football. While his playing career was modest, his deep involvement at Mainz set the stage for his transition into coaching at the same club.
Career
Klopp became manager of Mainz 05, where he eventually guided the club to promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in its history before later experiencing relegation. He then took charge of Borussia Dortmund, where he achieved his major breakthrough. Under his leadership, Dortmund won consecutive Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012, completed a league and cup double, and reached the final of the UEFA Champions League. His Dortmund sides became known for their intense pressing, fast attacking play and strong team identity, and they emerged as the main domestic rivals to Bayern Munich during that period, helping to build his reputation across European football.
In 2015 Klopp was appointed manager of Liverpool in the English Premier League. Over the following years he rebuilt the club into a consistent contender, leading them to the UEFA Champions League title in 2019 and the Premier League title in 2020, ending the club's long wait for a domestic league championship. Around that period he also guided Liverpool to the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup, and the team later added the FA Cup and League Cup, while regularly competing for honours on multiple fronts. His high-intensity approach was sometimes described as "heavy metal football."
Recent work
Klopp concluded his tenure at Liverpool in 2024 after nearly nine years in charge, leaving as one of the most celebrated managers in the club's history. He subsequently moved into an executive role in football, taking up a position as Head of Global Soccer for the Red Bull group of clubs, overseeing soccer operations across its organisation rather than coaching a single team. He remains a highly respected figure in the game, admired for his tactical approach, man-management and lasting impact on the clubs he led.
