Known for: New York Knicks captain, two-time NCAA champion at Villanova, NBA All-Star

Jalen Brunson is an American professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association (NBA). A point guard, he won two national championships in college before establishing himself as an All-Star-level lead guard and the on-court leader of the New York Knicks.

Early life

Jalen Marquis Brunson was born on August 31, 1996, in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He is the son of Rick Brunson, a former NBA guard, and grew up around professional basketball. He became a highly regarded high school player in the Chicago suburbs, earning national player-of-the-year honours and helping his team win multiple state championships, which made him one of the most sought-after recruits of his class and set high expectations for his college career.

Career

Brunson played college basketball at Villanova University, where he was a central figure on two national championship teams, winning the NCAA title in 2016 and again in 2018. In his final college season he was named the consensus national player of the year. He was selected in the second round of the 2018 NBA draft by the Dallas Mavericks, a relatively low position given his later success.

With Dallas, Brunson developed from a second-round reserve into a reliable starting guard, raising his profile considerably with strong performances during the Mavericks' playoff runs. In 2022 he signed with the New York Knicks as a free agent, a move that proved transformative for both player and franchise. He quickly became the team's primary scorer and playmaker and was later named team captain.

Recent work

As a Knick, Brunson has earned NBA All-Star selection and All-NBA recognition, leading the team to deep playoff appearances and re-establishing the franchise as a postseason contender for the first time in years. He is known for his efficient mid-range scoring, crafty ball-handling and clutch fourth-quarter performances, as well as his leadership and durability despite not being among the league's most physically imposing guards. He has also taken on a prominent role in the National Basketball Players Association, serving in a leadership capacity within the union. Off the court, his close partnership with longtime friend and teammate Josh Hart, with whom he also won championships at Villanova, and his role in revitalising one of the league's flagship franchises have made him one of the more closely followed and respected guards in the modern NBA. His combination of college pedigree and professional success has frequently been cited as a model of player development.
