Known for: Arrested Development, Ozark, Horrible Bosses, Juno

Jason Bateman is an American actor, director and producer whose career spans child stardom in television, a celebrated adult comeback in comedy, and acclaimed work as both a dramatic actor and director. He is widely known for his roles in the sitcom Arrested Development and the crime drama Ozark.

Early life

Bateman was born on 14 January 1969 in Rye, New York, into a family with show-business connections; his sister, Justine Bateman, also became an actress. He began working as a child actor, appearing in television series during the 1980s and becoming a familiar young performer on American television.

Career

After early success as a child and teen actor, Bateman experienced a quieter period before achieving a major career resurgence in 2003 with the comedy series Arrested Development, in which he played Michael Bluth, the relatively level-headed member of a dysfunctional family. The role earned him significant critical praise and helped re-establish him as a leading comic actor. The series became a cult favorite and was later revived.

Bateman built on this success with a string of film comedies in which his dry, understated style became a signature. He appeared in popular studio comedies including Horrible Bosses and its sequel, and he took a supporting role in the acclaimed film Juno. His screen persona, often that of an exasperated everyman, made him a dependable presence in mainstream comedy throughout the 2000s and 2010s.

Recent work

Bateman expanded into directing and dramatic acting with the Netflix series Ozark, in which he starred as financial adviser Marty Byrde and also served as a director and executive producer. The series was a critical success and demonstrated his ability to handle darker, more serious material, earning him significant industry recognition for both his acting and directing. He has been honored with major television awards for his work on the show.

Beyond Ozark, Bateman has directed feature films, including the thriller-comedy The Family Fang and the comedy Bad Words, in which he also starred. He has continued to take on producing roles and has lent his voice to animated projects. He is also known for co-hosting a popular podcast with fellow actors, discussing entertainment and personal topics in a conversational format.

Bateman is regarded as one of the more versatile figures of his generation, having successfully navigated the transition from child star to acclaimed adult performer and respected director. His combination of comedic timing and dramatic depth has kept him in demand across film and television.
