Early life

Catherine Anne O'Hara was born on March 4, 1954, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She grew up in a large family and was drawn to comedy early, becoming associated with the Toronto branch of the influential improvisational comedy troupe The Second City. Her work in live and improvised comedy laid the foundation for the character-driven style that would mark her later career.

Career

O'Hara came to prominence as a member of the cast of "SCTV", the acclaimed Canadian sketch comedy series, where she created and performed a wide range of memorable characters alongside collaborators such as Eugene Levy, Martin Short and others. Her work on the program established her as a leading comic performer and earned her early recognition in television.

She moved into film with roles in a number of well-known movies. She appeared in Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice" (1988) and reunited with Burton on later projects, and she became widely recognized for playing Kate McCallister, the mother in the hugely popular family comedy "Home Alone" (1990) and its sequel. O'Hara also became a key member of director Christopher Guest's ensemble of improvising actors, appearing in mockumentary comedies including "Waiting for Guffman", "Best in Show" and "A Mighty Wind", the last of which brought her significant critical praise.

Over the years she lent her voice to animated films, including Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas", and continued to take supporting and character roles across film and television, often standing out for her comic precision.

Recent work

O'Hara achieved renewed acclaim for her role as Moira Rose in the Canadian television comedy "Schitt's Creek", co-created by Eugene Levy and his son Daniel Levy. Her portrayal of the eccentric, theatrical matriarch became one of the show's most celebrated elements, and in 2020 she won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series as the show swept its category. The role introduced her to a broad new audience and is frequently cited among the highlights of her career.

She has continued to work in film and television, including a return to the world of "Beetlejuice" in its 2024 sequel. Regarded as one of the most accomplished comic actresses of her generation, O'Hara remains admired for her improvisational skill and her ability to create vivid, distinctive characters.
