Actor & director
Brie Larson is an American actor and filmmaker who won the Academy Award for Best Actress and later became known for portraying Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her work spans independent dramas, studio blockbusters, and directing.
Early life
Born Brianne Sidonie Desaulniers in Sacramento, California, Larson was raised partly in California after her family moved there to pursue her early interest in performing. She was educated largely at home and began acting and modeling as a child, appearing in commercials and television before transitioning into film roles. She also pursued music early in her career, releasing material as a young performer before focusing on acting. These early experiences across television, modeling, and music gave her broad exposure to the entertainment industry well before her breakthrough as a dramatic film actor.
Career
Larson appeared in television and supporting film roles through the 2000s, including a role on the sitcom United States of Tara. She gained critical recognition for her performance in the independent drama Short Term 12, which highlighted her dramatic abilities and led to broader opportunities. Her breakthrough came with the film Room, in which she played a young mother held in captivity with her son; the performance earned widespread acclaim and won her the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Following that success, Larson took on a range of projects, including the monster film Kong: Skull Island. She joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Carol Danvers, the title character of Captain Marvel, appearing in that film and subsequent MCU productions. She also made her feature directorial debut with the film Unicorn Store, in which she also starred.
Recent work
Larson has continued to balance major franchise work with other projects, reprising her role as Captain Marvel in additional Marvel films, including ensemble entries and the sequel that paired her character with others from the franchise. She has also appeared in television and streaming productions and lent her voice and presence to a variety of media projects. Beyond acting and directing, she has built a presence as a digital creator, sharing content about her life and interests with online audiences, and she has remained active as a producer. Larson has used her public platform to advocate for inclusion and representation in the film industry, drawing attention to the importance of diversity among critics, filmmakers, and on-screen talent. Her career reflects a combination of critically acclaimed dramatic work and high-profile roles in large-scale studio films, positioning her as both an awards-recognized performer and a familiar face in mainstream blockbuster cinema.
