Neil Young
Singer-songwriter & guitarist
Neil Young is a Canadian-American singer-songwriter, guitarist and musician regarded as one of the most influential figures in rock music. Known for his distinctive high voice, his expressive guitar playing and a restless, independent approach to his work, he has built a career spanning more than half a century as both a solo artist and a member of celebrated bands.
Early life
Young was born on November 12, 1945, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and spent part of his childhood in rural Ontario before his family moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, following his parents' separation. He contracted polio as a child. As a teenager in Winnipeg he immersed himself in music, playing in local bands and developing his songwriting before relocating to pursue a career in the United States.
Career
Young first gained prominence in the 1960s as a member of Buffalo Springfield, a band that became influential in the folk-rock and rock scene of the era. He soon launched a solo career and also began a long association with the backing band Crazy Horse, with whom he recorded much of his harder-edged, guitar-driven music. His solo albums, including "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" and "After the Gold Rush," established him as a major songwriting talent.
He joined the group Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, contributing to its acclaimed harmony-rich recordings and high-profile performances. His 1972 album "Harvest," featuring widely loved songs, became one of his best-selling records and broadened his audience. Throughout the following decades Young pursued an unusually varied path, moving between folk, country, hard rock and experimental styles, and frequently defying commercial expectations in favor of artistic exploration.
Recent work
Young has remained prolific, continuing to release new albums and to tour, often reuniting with Crazy Horse. He has been recognized with induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, both as a solo artist and as a band member, and is widely cited as an influence by later generations of musicians, including figures associated with the grunge movement.
Beyond music, Young has been an outspoken advocate on environmental and social issues and has pursued projects related to high-quality audio and to his lifelong interest in model trains and classic cars. He has published memoirs and made his extensive archive of recordings available to fans. A figure known for his integrity and creative independence, Young continues to record and perform, maintaining his status as one of rock's enduring and most respected artists.
