Early life

Vin Diesel was born Mark Sinclair on July 18, 1967, in California and raised in New York City. He grew up in an artistic household, where his stepfather worked in theater, and he became involved in performing at a young age, appearing in stage productions as a child after an early encounter with an off-Broadway company. He attended college, where he studied creative writing, before pursuing acting and filmmaking full time, and he supported his early career with various jobs while seeking opportunities in film.

Career

Diesel first drew attention in the late 1990s with a self-produced short film and a role in Steven Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan." He gained wider recognition for his voice work as the title character in the animated film "The Iron Giant" and for starring in the science-fiction film "Pitch Black," which introduced the character Riddick.

His career reached a new level with "The Fast and the Furious" (2001), in which he played street racer Dominic Toretto. The film launched a long-running franchise that grew into a global box-office juggernaut, and Diesel became both its leading actor and a key producer, helping shape its direction over many sequels. He also led other action properties, including the "xXx" series and further "Riddick" films.
