Adam Driver
Actor & producer
Adam Driver is an American actor known for his work across independent films, major studio franchises and television. He has been nominated for Academy Awards and is recognized for a versatile screen presence that ranges from intense dramatic roles to comedy. He came to wide attention through the HBO series Girls and the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
Early life
Driver was born on 19 November 1983 in San Diego, California, and grew up largely in Mishawaka, Indiana. After high school he served in the United States Marine Corps, an experience he has described as formative. Following a medical discharge stemming from an injury, he pursued acting and studied at the Juilliard School in New York, where he trained in theater.
Career
After Juilliard, Driver worked on the New York stage and in small film roles before being cast as Adam Sackler in Lena Dunham's HBO series Girls, which ran from 2012 to 2017 and brought him significant recognition, including multiple Emmy nominations. During this period he also appeared in films by directors such as the Coen brothers, Steven Spielberg, Jim Jarmusch and Noah Baumbach.
In 2015 he took on the role of Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, continuing in the subsequent two films of the sequel trilogy. The role made him known to global audiences and anchored one of the highest-grossing film franchises. Alongside the blockbusters, he maintained a steady output of independent and auteur-driven projects.
Recent work
Driver received his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman, and a Best Actor nomination for Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story, in which he played a theater director going through a divorce. He has continued to collaborate with notable directors, appearing in House of Gucci, Annette, the racing drama Ferrari in which he portrayed Enzo Ferrari, and Michael Mann and Francis Ford Coppola productions.
In addition to film, Driver co-founded Arts in the Armed Forces, a nonprofit that brings theater and performing arts programming to military communities, drawing on his own background as a veteran. He has also returned periodically to the stage in New York, maintaining the theater roots established during his training. Critics have frequently noted his willingness to take on demanding, unconventional parts rather than relying solely on his franchise profile.
Known for an immersive approach to his roles and a tall, distinctive screen presence, Driver has established himself as one of the more prominent actors of his generation. He has worked repeatedly with directors he admires, building ongoing collaborations rather than chasing only high-profile projects. Balancing large franchise work with smaller, character-focused films, he has earned a reputation as a serious dramatic performer whose choices are closely followed by audiences and the film industry alike.
