Abhishek Bachchan is an Indian actor who works in Hindi cinema. The son of actors Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, he has built a career across commercial action films, ensemble dramas and character-driven roles. He is recognized both for his work on screen and as a member of one of the best-known families in the Indian film industry.

Early life

Bachchan was born on 5 February 1976 in Mumbai. Growing up in a prominent film family, he was educated in India and abroad before pursuing acting. He has frequently been asked about following in the footsteps of his father, one of Indian cinema's most celebrated stars, and has spoken about the expectations that accompanied his entry into films.

Career

He made his acting debut in 2000 with Refugee. His early years in the industry included a mix of films that met with varying commercial success. A significant phase came in the mid-2000s, when he appeared in Mani Ratnam's Yuva, the caper Bunty Aur Babli opposite Rani Mukerji, and the action thriller Dhoom, which launched a popular franchise. His performance in the 2006 drama Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna was also well received.

In 2007 he starred in Guru, again directed by Mani Ratnam, playing a businessman whose rise mirrors that of a major industrialist. The role earned him strong reviews and is often regarded as among his finest work. He reprised his role in the Dhoom sequels, which were among the higher-grossing Indian films of their time.

Recent work

In later years Bachchan took on a range of projects across film and streaming platforms, including dramas and biographical roles. He appeared in films such as Manmarziyaan and the sports drama biopic about a kabaddi-themed story, as well as ensemble and family-oriented films. He has also explored work on web series, reflecting the broader shift in the Indian entertainment industry toward streaming.

Beyond acting, Bachchan has been involved in sports ownership, holding stakes in professional kabaddi and football teams in India, which has linked his public profile to the growth of league sports in the country. His investment in the Pro Kabaddi League in particular is often credited with helping raise the visibility of the sport domestically. He is married to actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and the couple, together with his parents, form one of the most closely followed families in Indian public life.

Across his career Bachchan has received Indian film award recognition, including honors for his performances in critically praised dramas. He has spoken candidly about the challenges of working in the shadow of his father's celebrated legacy while seeking to define his own path as a performer. Continuing to take on a variety of roles, he balances commercial ventures with more dramatic parts and has remained a steady presence in Hindi cinema across changing trends in the industry.
