Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy is a professional golfer from Northern Ireland who is widely regarded as one of the leading players of his generation. A former world number one, he has won multiple major championships and has spent many weeks atop the Official World Golf Ranking. In April 2025 he won the Masters Tournament, completing the career Grand Slam by capturing all four of golf's modern major titles.

Early life

McIlroy was born on May 4, 1989, in Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland. He was introduced to golf at a very young age by his father, Gerry, and showed exceptional talent as a child, joining the Holywood Golf Club and drawing attention for his ability while still in his early teens. He had a decorated amateur career, reaching the top of the World Amateur Golf Ranking before turning professional in 2007.

Career

McIlroy quickly established himself on the European Tour and then on the PGA Tour. He claimed his first major title at the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional, setting scoring records on his way to a commanding victory. He added the PGA Championship in 2012, won The Open Championship in 2014 at Royal Liverpool, and captured a second PGA Championship later that same year. These wins, achieved while he was still in his mid-twenties, marked him as one of the most accomplished young players in the modern game.

Across his career McIlroy has been a fixture in the upper reaches of the world ranking and a central figure for Europe in the Ryder Cup, where he has played in multiple editions and contributed to several European victories. He has also won numerous tournaments on both the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour, including FedEx Cup titles and signature events, and has been recognized repeatedly with player-of-the-year honors.

Recent work

For more than a decade, the Masters at Augusta National was the one major that eluded McIlroy, a gap that became a recurring storyline in golf. He ended that wait in April 2025, winning the Masters and becoming one of the small number of players in history to complete the career Grand Slam. The victory was widely celebrated as a defining moment of his career and reaffirmed his standing among the sport's elite. Off the course, McIlroy has been active in golf's business and competitive affairs and has supported charitable causes through his foundation. He continues to compete at the highest level on the world's major tours.
