Rory McIlroy Aims to Tweak Game Before The Open

Rory McIlroy is gearing up for The Open, and he's been candid about his game. After a strong finish at the Genesis Scottish Open, where he shot a final-round 64 to finish 12 under, he acknowledged that adjustments are still needed.

A Solid Comeback

After being a contender through the first rounds at the Renaissance Club, McIlroy seemed poised. His early play, with rounds of 65 and 66, had him sharing the lead. However, a fog-affected third-round 73 limited his momentum, leaving him disappointed.

Despite the earlier setback, McIlroy bounced back in his last round, hitting eight birdies and only two bogeys. This performance matched his best score of the year, a clear sign that a turnaround could be in the works. "I definitely hit it a little better today than I did in round three," he said, reflecting on his final day.

Identifying the Problems

The world No. 2 knows where he needs to focus. "I noticed a few things in my game and my iron shots," McIlroy admitted. He’s been grappling with the impact of the wind affecting his swing. With adjustments necessary, he ventured to the range between rounds, aiming to rectify his issues before The Open kicks off.

McIlroy pointed out that he tends to hit his iron shots left when the wind blows from the left, leading to inconsistency. "I just get into that bad habit of hitting it further left than the path at impact," he explained.

The Path Ahead

With just days until The Open, McIlroy is putting in the work. He's clear that he needs to mend certain aspects of his game but remains optimistic. "I know I need to do a bit of work between now and next Thursday to feel really comfortable with my game. I don't feel like it's too far away. There's definitely some positive signs," he stated.

His performance against the backdrop of the Scottish Open has given him a springboard of confidence. He briefly chased a late victory, birdieing five of the first seven holes in the final round and showing glimpses of his championship potential.

Golf’s Mental Game

Even with a strong finish, McIlroy described himself as 'so bad at golf' at times. A misstep at the 16th hole led to a bogey, but he quickly rebounded with another birdie, ending his week strong. The day’s rollercoaster was a reminder that even the top athletes contend with the sport’s mental challenges.

As the countdown to The Open continues, Rory, despite his self-assessment, is a threat on the course. His tenacity and talent will surely keep fans engaged. With over 75 hours of live coverage set for the tournament, golf enthusiasts won't want to miss a minute of the action.
