McIlroy Fades in Fog as Fitzpatrick Grabs Share of Scottish Open Lead

Rory McIlroy dropped five shots off the pace through eight holes Saturday before fog suspended the third round of the Genesis Scottish Open.

Rory McIlroy's bid for Genesis Scottish Open glory hit a wall on Saturday, and mother nature didn't help. The Northern Irishman slid five strokes off the lead through just eight holes before foggy conditions at The Renaissance Club forced officials to halt play at 7:55pm BST.
McIlroy had looked like a serious contender heading into the weekend — he'd been treating the tournament as prime preparation for The Open — but Saturday told a very different story.
From Leader to Chaser in Eight Holes
McIlroy started the day sharing the overnight lead, riding the momentum of back-to-back strong rounds, including what he called a "complete performance" in his opening 65. The third round, though, unravelled fast.
Three bogeys in five holes — at the third, fifth, and seventh — left him sitting at six-under par, well adrift of the pace. The mistakes weren't close calls either. On the par-three fifth, he chunked a tee shot a mere 125 yards, barely reaching the front fringe. At the seventh, he drove into the rough, then hacked a recovery shot out of a bush that traveled just nine yards forward — back into more rough. He scrambled to save par on the eighth before the fog finally called everyone in.
For a player who has been consistently sharp this week, it was a rare and ugly stretch of golf.
Fitzpatrick and Thorbjornsen Set the Pace
While McIlroy was dropping shots, his European Ryder Cup teammate Matt Fitzpatrick was climbing. The Englishman surged to 11-under par, sharing the lead with American amateur Michael Thorbjornsen, who rocketed 12 places up the leaderboard after going five-under through 13 holes.
Thorbjornsen admitted the fog created serious challenges by the end of his round, according to Sky Sports, saying he was losing sight of his drives before they reached their apex and simply had to trust his swing.
A Crowded Chasing Pack
One shot back at 10-under, a loaded group is primed to make moves when play resumes Sunday morning. American Johnny Keefer headlines that pack after a scorching third-round 64 — a 22-place leap up the leaderboard. He's notably the third alternate for next week's Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, so a strong finish carries major implications beyond just this week's trophy.
Keefer was joined at 10-under by fellow Americans Kevin Roy, Wyndham Clark (who had gone four-under through 15 holes before the fog suspension), and Chris Gotterup (through 10 holes). Australian Min Woo Lee and England's Jordan Smith also sit one shot off the lead, both with several holes still to complete.
Roy, in particular, has extra motivation — a top-three finish among players not already exempt could earn him a spot in The Open field.
MacIntyre, Kim Still Alive
Former Scottish Open champion Robert MacIntyre is lurking two shots back after picking up two birdies on his front nine, keeping the home crowd's hopes alive. Tom Kim, who shared the 36-hole lead with McIlroy and Smith, played steady but unspectacular golf — all pars through seven holes — and sits at nine-under, still within striking distance.
What Comes Next
Tournament organizers confirmed the third round will restart at 7am Sunday, with the final round beginning no earlier than 10:15am, with players teeing off from a single tee. It's going to be a long day at North Berwick.
For McIlroy, the math isn't impossible — he's five back with holes remaining in round three — but he'll need a dramatic turnaround just to factor into the conversation. The same player who looked unbeatable 48 hours ago now needs a near-perfect final stretch just to stay relevant.
