Reigning champion Scottie Scheffler, starting the day with confidence, managed a two-under 68, recovering from his missed cut at the Genesis Scottish Open last week. Meanwhile, Tommy Fleetwood, caught up in the search for an English win at The Open, ended with a 69, alongside notable players like Tyrrell Hatton and Jon Rahm.

McIlroy hopes for a turnaround similar to that of 2017, when he rallied from an opening-round 71 to finish tied for fourth. With a strong performance required on Friday to remain in contention, he expressed optimism about the conditions improving. “I’m still not too far away,” he commented. “I just need to shoot a good round and get myself right back in it.”
