Roger Goodell

NFL commissioner

Born: February 19, 1959, Jamestown, New York, United States
Known for: Commissioner of the National Football League

Roger Goodell is an American sports executive who has served as the commissioner of the National Football League since 2006. As the league's chief executive, he has overseen a period of significant commercial growth alongside ongoing debates over player safety, discipline, and the sport's broader role in American society.

Early life

Goodell was born on February 19, 1959, in Jamestown, New York. He is the son of Charles Goodell, who served as a U.S. Representative and later a U.S. Senator from New York and was known for his opposition to the Vietnam War. Goodell was a multi-sport athlete in high school in Bronxville, New York, captaining teams in football, basketball, and baseball, though injuries ended his playing ambitions. He attended Washington & Jefferson College in Pennsylvania, graduating with a degree in economics, and pursued a career in the football business from an early age.

Career

Goodell joined the NFL as an administrative intern in 1982 after writing letters to the league office and team executives seeking a job. He steadily rose through the league office over the following decades, working in areas including club operations, business development, stadium projects, and league administration. He eventually became the NFL's chief operating officer, overseeing many of its business functions. In 2006 he was elected to succeed Paul Tagliabue as commissioner, taking on responsibility for the league's overall operations, labor relations, and long-term business strategy.

Recent work

As commissioner, Goodell has presided over major increases in the league's revenue, driven in large part by lucrative television and media-rights agreements, the expansion of international games in Europe and beyond, and new digital and streaming partnerships. His tenure has also included high-profile and sometimes contentious issues, including disputes over player discipline and the scope of his disciplinary authority, collective bargaining negotiations with the players' union, controversies surrounding player protests during the national anthem, and intensified scrutiny of concussions and long-term player health. He has been both credited with the league's financial success and growth into the most valuable sports enterprise in the United States and criticized over his handling of various disciplinary, labor, and safety matters. Under his leadership the league has invested in initiatives related to player health, youth football, and social-justice programs, while also navigating periodic public controversies. As one of the highest-paid executives in professional sports, Goodell has signed multiple contract extensions to continue leading the league, and he has set goals for further revenue growth and international expansion in the years ahead.
