Darth Vader, Tom Brady & Goodell Team Up for Disney-NFL Gear Line

Disney and the NFL officially merged universes at Fanatics Fest, launching a 32-team apparel collection pairing iconic characters with every franchise.

The Force is strong with this one — and so is the NFL shield. Disney and the National Football League staged one of the more unexpected crossovers in sports and entertainment history Thursday, unveiling a full-scale collaborative apparel line that drops Star Wars villains, Marvel heroes, and Pixar favorites onto the chest of every team in the league.
Vader Takes the Stage in New York
The reveal went down at Fanatics Fest inside New York's Jacob Javits Center, and the optics were hard to top. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stood on stage alongside Las Vegas Raiders owner Tom Brady, Raiders quarterback Fernando Mendoza, and — somehow — Darth Vader himself, flanked by a pair of Stormtroopers. Marvel chairman Kevin Feige was watching from the crowd. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Vader was formally announced as the first pick in a live "Disney Fan Draft" held on the convention floor, kicking off the official launch of the Disney | Champion NFL Collection.
It sounds wild on paper. In person, it apparently played even bigger.
How the Pairings Were Made
This wasn't random costume casting. Bret Healey, director of graphic design at Disney Consumer Products, says his team treated the drafting process with genuine strategic intent. They evaluated each franchise's personality, color scheme, fanbase culture, and city identity before locking in a character.
"Whichever character worked best for that team, that's the story we were going to tell, even if they are a tertiary character," Healey explained.
The results speak for themselves. The Buffalo Bills got Beast from Beauty and the Beast. The Dallas Cowboys are paired with Woody from Toy Story. Captain America landed with the New England Patriots — a match that basically writes itself. The New York Jets got Buzz Lightyear, the Giants drew Wreck-It Ralph, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers linked up with Captain Hook, and the Washington Commanders were assigned Toy Story's Hamm. Vader, of course, went to the Raiders — a pairing that needed zero explanation.
Eight teams launched at the Fest. All 32 franchises hit shelves in August.
Big Business Behind the Mashup
Make no mistake — this is a serious revenue play. Disney's consumer products division pulled in $974 million in revenue during its most recent quarter, posting operating income of $479 million. Those are elite-level margins built largely on licensing deals with manufacturing partners like Champion, which is handling production for this collection.
Paul Gitter, Disney's executive VP of global brand commercialization, framed the launch as part of a broader push around ESPN's upcoming "Year of the Super Bowl," signaling that this collaboration is less of a one-off stunt and more of an anchor piece in a long-term sports strategy.
"We're expanding how fans engage with Disney across sports through moments that drive relevance, connection and long-term brand affinity," Gitter said.
Two Empires, One Product Line
Both Disney and the NFL are famously protective of their intellectual property. Getting these two giants to align on something as consumer-facing and style-dependent as a clothing line is no small logistical or legal feat. The fact that they pulled it off — and did it publicly, with Stormtroopers on stage at one of the biggest fan conventions of the year — says plenty about where both organizations see the crossover market heading.
Sports culture and pop culture have been bleeding into each other for years, and deals like this one are becoming the norm rather than the exception. With the league's global profile expanding rapidly and Disney's entertainment machine running at full throttle, this collection feels less like a novelty item and more like the first move in a much longer game. If the August full-roster rollout lands the way both sides are hoping, expect this partnership to grow well beyond apparel.
For Goodell, it's another win in the NFL's ongoing push to broaden its cultural footprint. For Disney, it's a direct pipeline into 32 passionate fanbases. For Darth Vader, it's just another galaxy to conquer.
