Shaquille O'Neal
Former NBA center & analyst
Shaquille O'Neal is an American former professional basketball player widely regarded as one of the most dominant centers in the history of the sport. Over a long career he won multiple championships and individual honors, and after retiring he became a popular television analyst, businessman, and entertainer. His combination of size, power, and personality made him one of the most recognizable athletes of his era.
Early life
O'Neal was born on March 6, 1972, in Newark, New Jersey. He grew up in a military family and spent part of his childhood living abroad before the family settled in Texas. He starred in basketball in high school and then attended Louisiana State University, where he became one of the most celebrated players in college basketball, earning national player of the year recognition before leaving school to enter the professional ranks.
Career
O'Neal was selected first overall in the 1992 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic, where he quickly emerged as a star and led the team to the NBA Finals. He later joined the Los Angeles Lakers, with whom he achieved the greatest success of his career, winning three consecutive championships in the early 2000s alongside guard Kobe Bryant. He was named the Finals Most Valuable Player in each of those title runs and earned a league Most Valuable Player award during his time with the team.
After his Lakers tenure, O'Neal played for several other franchises, including the Miami Heat, with whom he won a fourth NBA championship. He was a perennial all-star and a multiple-time scoring champion, and his physical dominance in the post reshaped how teams defended the center position. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in recognition of his accomplishments.
Recent work
Since retiring as a player, O'Neal has become a prominent television personality, best known as an analyst on the studio program "Inside the NBA," where his humor and commentary have made the show a fan favorite. He has built an extensive business career, with investments and endorsement deals across numerous industries, and he has worked as a recording artist and disc jockey under the name DJ Diesel. He is also active in philanthropy and public engagement, supporting community and educational initiatives.
