Liam Hemsworth
Actor
Liam Hemsworth is an Australian actor best known for playing Gale Hawthorne in the Hunger Games film series and, more recently, for taking over the lead role in Netflix's The Witcher. The youngest of the three Hemsworth acting brothers, he began his career in Australian television before moving to Hollywood, where he established himself in major studio productions across the action, romance and science-fiction genres.
Early life
Liam Hemsworth was born on January 13, 1990, in Melbourne, Australia, the youngest son of Leonie and Craig Hemsworth. His older brothers, Chris and Luke Hemsworth, are also actors. The family spent part of his childhood on Phillip Island, Victoria. Hemsworth began acting in his late teens, appearing in Australian television series including Neighbours and The Elephant Princess before relocating to the United States to pursue film roles.
Career
Hemsworth gained early attention with the romantic drama The Last Song (2010), based on a Nicholas Sparks novel, opposite Miley Cyrus, whom he later married and subsequently divorced. His breakthrough came with The Hunger Games (2012) and its sequels, in which he played Gale Hawthorne, a central figure in the dystopian franchise based on Suzanne Collins's novels that became one of the most successful film series of the decade. He went on to appear in action and ensemble films including Independence Day: Resurgence (2016), The Expendables 2 (2012), Paranoia and Isn't It Romantic (2019).
Throughout his career Hemsworth has worked across genres, taking roles in thrillers, comedies and dramas while maintaining a profile in large-scale studio projects. He has frequently been compared to and worked in the shadow of his older brother Chris Hemsworth, who found fame as Marvel's Thor, and the two have spoken about their shared path from Australia to Hollywood. Liam has also been involved in environmental and animal-welfare advocacy and has supported various charitable causes.
Recent work
In 2022 it was announced that Hemsworth would take over the lead role of Geralt of Rivia in Netflix's fantasy series The Witcher, succeeding Henry Cavill from the fourth season. The casting drew significant attention from the show's large fan base, given Cavill's popularity in the role, and the season featuring Hemsworth was released in the mid-2020s. He has continued to take on film and television work, balancing franchise roles with smaller independent projects. Hemsworth remains one of several Australian actors of his generation to achieve sustained success in Hollywood, and his move into a leading fantasy-series role marked a significant new stage in his career.
