Early life
Michael Fassbender was born on April 2, 1977, in Heidelberg, then West Germany, to a German father and an Irish mother. The family moved to Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland, when he was a young child, and he was raised there. He developed an early interest in acting and trained at the Drama Centre London before beginning his career on stage and screen.
Career
Fassbender first gained wider attention through a supporting role in the HBO war miniseries Band of Brothers and appeared in the historical epic 300. His critical breakthrough came with Steve McQueen's Hunger (2008), in which he played IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands, undergoing a dramatic physical transformation. The film marked the first of several collaborations with McQueen, including Shame (2011), for which Fassbender drew acclaim, and 12 Years a Slave (2013), which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
He balanced this work with blockbuster roles, most notably as the young Magneto in the X-Men film series, beginning with X-Men: First Class (2011) and continuing through several sequels, where his portrayal of the conflicted mutant Erik Lehnsherr became a highlight of the franchise. Other notable performances include the title role in Steve Jobs (2015), directed by Danny Boyle and written by Aaron Sorkin, which brought him a second Academy Award nomination, this time for Best Actor. He also starred in Ridley Scott's science-fiction films Prometheus and its sequel Alien: Covenant, the western Slow West, the chess drama Pawn Sacrifice, and an adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth opposite Marion Cotillard.
