Early life

Michael Bakari Jordan was born on February 9, 1987, in Santa Ana, California, and grew up in Newark, New Jersey. He began modeling as a child and moved into acting at a young age. His early screen work included roles on television, most notably as Wallace in the first season of the HBO drama series The Wire, and as Reggie Montgomery on the soap opera All My Children. He later appeared in the acclaimed series Friday Night Lights as quarterback Vince Howard, performances that established him as a promising young actor.

Career

Jordan's breakthrough in film came with Fruitvale Station (2013), director Ryan Coogler's drama based on the real-life death of Oscar Grant. The collaboration proved pivotal: Jordan and Coogler reunited for Creed (2015), in which Jordan starred as Adonis Creed, the son of Apollo Creed, revitalizing the Rocky franchise. He reprised the role in Creed II (2018) and made his feature directorial debut with Creed III (2023), in which he also starred.

A further collaboration with Coogler came in Black Panther (2018), where Jordan played the antagonist Erik Killmonger, a performance widely praised as one of the most memorable villains in modern superhero cinema and central to the film's status as a cultural and box-office phenomenon. His other film credits include Just Mercy, in which he portrayed civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson, the dystopian science-fiction adaptation Fahrenheit 451, the romantic drama If Beale Street Could Talk's contemporary peers, and the action thriller Tom Clancy's Without Remorse. He also lent his voice to animated projects and built a reputation as a dedicated, physically committed performer who trains intensively for demanding roles.

Recent work

Jordan continued his partnership with Ryan Coogler in Sinners (2025), a period horror film in which he played dual roles as twin brothers, earning strong reviews and notable commercial success. He has expanded his work behind the camera through his production company, Outlier Society, which develops film and television projects across genres and has championed inclusion-rider initiatives aimed at increasing diversity in hiring on its productions. Beyond film, Jordan has pursued business and brand ventures and has been recognized repeatedly as one of the entertainment industry's most influential figures. Balancing leading-man roles with his ambitions as a producer and director, Jordan remains one of Hollywood's most prominent and bankable stars.
