Mark Hamill is an American actor best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the "Star Wars" film franchise and for an extensive career as a voice actor, most notably as the Joker in animated and video-game adaptations of Batman. His work across live action and voice performance has made him a familiar figure in popular culture for half a century.

Early life

Hamill was born in Oakland, California, in 1951, one of several children in a Navy family that moved frequently during his childhood, including a period living in Japan. He graduated from high school in Yokohama and later studied drama at Los Angeles City College, beginning his professional career in television in the early 1970s with guest roles and soap-opera work.

Career

Hamill appeared in several television series before being cast as Luke Skywalker in George Lucas's "Star Wars" (1977). The film became a global phenomenon, and Hamill reprised the role in "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi," completing the original trilogy and securing his place as a central figure in one of cinema's most successful franchises.

After the original trilogy, Hamill worked extensively in theater, including Broadway productions, and took roles in film and television. He gradually built a parallel and highly regarded career as a voice actor. His portrayal of the Joker, beginning with "Batman: The Animated Series" in the early 1990s, became widely celebrated and was reprised across numerous animated films, series, and video games, including the "Batman: Arkham" games. He voiced a wide range of other characters in animation and gaming over the following decades.

Recent work

Hamill returned to the "Star Wars" saga as an older Luke Skywalker in the sequel trilogy, appearing in "The Force Awakens," "The Last Jedi," and "The Rise of Skywalker," and in related projects connected to the franchise. The return brought renewed attention to the role and to his standing with longtime fans.

Outside of "Star Wars," he has continued to take character roles in film and television, including appearances in projects such as "The Machine" and the series "Knightfall," and he has remained one of the busiest voice actors of his generation. He is also known for an active and good-humored public presence, engaging widely with fans and supporting charitable causes. Hamill has received recognition across his career, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and is regarded both for his iconic on-screen role and for his influential voice work in animation and games.
