Lenny Kravitz is an American singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose music blends rock, funk, soul and blues. Active since the late 1980s, he is known for a retro-influenced sound, his work as a producer and player across multiple instruments, and a career that has also extended into acting and design.

Early life

Leonard Albert Kravitz was born on May 26, 1964, in New York City. His father, Sy Kravitz, was a television producer of Russian-Jewish descent, and his mother, Roxie Roker, was an actress of Bahamian and African American heritage, best known for the sitcom The Jeffersons. The family later moved to Los Angeles, where Kravitz sang in the California Boys Choir and was exposed to a wide range of music. He adopted the stage name Romeo Blue before reverting to his given name as he developed his own style.

Career

Kravitz released his debut album, Let Love Rule, in 1989, writing, producing and performing much of the material himself. He broke through internationally with the 1991 album Mama Said, which included the hit ballad "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over." His 1993 album Are You Gonna Go My Way established him as a major rock artist, with its title track becoming a signature song. He continued his commercial success with albums such as Circus, 5 and the song "Fly Away," and reached new audiences with a cover of "American Woman" featured in the film Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.

Kravitz won the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for four consecutive years between 1999 and 2002, a record for the category. Known for playing guitar, bass, drums and keyboards on his recordings, he has cultivated an image rooted in 1960s and 1970s rock aesthetics while collaborating with a wide range of artists across rock, soul and pop. He produced and co-wrote Madonna's hit "Justify My Love" early in his career, an indication of his reach as a songwriter beyond his own albums. His marriage to actress Lisa Bonet during this period, and their daughter, the actress Zoë Kravitz, also kept him in the public eye.

Recent work

Beyond music, Kravitz has pursued acting, appearing as the stylist Cinna in The Hunger Games films, and has worked in interior and product design through his firm Kravitz Design. He has continued to tour and record, releasing albums including Raise Vibration (2018) and Blue Electric Light (2024). In 2024 he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He has also published a memoir reflecting on his early years and the development of his musical identity. Now active for more than three decades, Kravitz remains a recognizable figure in rock music, noted for his longevity, distinctive style and command of multiple instruments, and continues to perform at major festivals and venues around the world.
