Paul McCartney
Musician & songwriter
Sir Paul McCartney is an English musician, singer, and songwriter who gained worldwide fame as a member of the Beatles, one of the most influential bands in the history of popular music. With John Lennon, he formed one of the most celebrated songwriting partnerships of the twentieth century.
Early life
James Paul McCartney was born on June 18, 1942, in Liverpool, England. He grew up in a musical household and took an early interest in playing instruments, becoming proficient on guitar and later bass. As a teenager he met John Lennon, and the two began writing songs together, a collaboration that would form the creative core of the Beatles. The loss of his mother during his youth was an event he later referenced in his songwriting.
Career
McCartney rose to global fame in the 1960s as a member of the Beatles alongside Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The band's recordings transformed popular music, and McCartney contributed lead vocals, bass, and many of the group's most enduring compositions, including 'Yesterday', 'Hey Jude', and 'Let It Be'. The Beatles achieved unprecedented commercial and cultural success before disbanding in 1970.
Following the breakup, McCartney launched a solo career and formed the band Wings with his first wife, Linda McCartney, and others. Wings became one of the most successful groups of the 1970s, producing hit albums and singles such as 'Band on the Run' and 'Live and Let Die'. He continued to record and tour as a solo artist, maintaining a prolific output across decades.
Recent work
McCartney has remained active well into later life, releasing solo albums including the self-recorded McCartney III and continuing to perform to large audiences around the world. He has headlined major festivals and undertaken extensive international tours, performing songs from across his career.
He participated in the Beatles documentary project Get Back, which revisited the band's later sessions, and was involved in a later Beatles recording assembled using restored archival material. McCartney has received numerous honors, including a knighthood and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame both as a member of the Beatles and as a solo artist. He has also published works including a collection of his lyrics and children's books, and has supported various charitable and animal welfare causes over the course of his career. Widely regarded as one of the most successful and influential songwriters in the history of popular music, he continues to record, perform, and contribute to music and the arts well into his later years.
