Early life
Laura Elizabeth Dern was born on February 10, 1967, in Los Angeles, California, into an acting family. Her parents are actors Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd, and she was exposed to filmmaking from early childhood. She appeared in small film roles as a child and pursued acting seriously as a teenager, gaining early professional experience before fully launching her career.
Career
Dern drew early attention for her performances in Mask (1985) and especially in director David Lynch's Blue Velvet (1986), beginning a long creative collaboration with Lynch. She earned widespread recognition and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her role in Rambling Rose (1991), in which she starred alongside her mother. She reached a broad mainstream audience in 1993 as paleobotanist Dr. Ellie Sattler in Steven Spielberg's blockbuster Jurassic Park.
