Actor
Simu Liu is a Canadian actor, writer, and producer best known for playing the title role in Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and for his earlier work on the Canadian sitcom Kim's Convenience. Born in China and raised in Canada, he became one of the first Asian leads of a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, a milestone widely noted for its significance to representation in mainstream cinema.
Early life
Simu Liu was born in Harbin, China, in 1989. He spent his early childhood being raised by his grandparents before immigrating to Canada to join his parents, settling in the Toronto area. He studied business and earned a degree from the Ivey Business School at Western University, after which he briefly worked as an accountant. After being laid off, he turned to acting, beginning with background and stunt work, including an uncredited appearance in the film Pacific Rim.
Career
Liu built his early career through guest roles in Canadian television and a starring part in the web and television series Blood and Water. He took on a variety of small parts across film and television and worked as a stuntman while developing his craft. His breakthrough came with Kim's Convenience, the CBC sitcom in which he played Jung, the son of a Korean-Canadian family running a convenience store. The series ran from 2016 to 2021 and gained an international audience through streaming, raising his profile considerably and establishing him as a recognizable comic actor.
In 2019 Marvel Studios cast Liu as Shang-Chi, a casting choice he had publicly hoped for, and the film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was released in 2021. The movie was both a critical and commercial success and was praised for centering an Asian superhero and a predominantly Asian cast, with Liu performing in a role that combined martial arts action with dramatic depth. The role established Liu as an international star and an advocate for greater diversity in Hollywood, and he became a prominent voice on questions of representation in mainstream film.
Recent work
Following Shang-Chi, Liu appeared in the ensemble cast of Greta Gerwig's Barbie (2023), playing one of the rival Kens, in a film that became one of the highest-grossing releases of the year. He has continued to take on a range of projects across film and television, including science-fiction and comedy features, and has lent his voice to animated work. Beyond acting, Liu published a memoir, We Were Dreamers, reflecting on his immigrant upbringing and path to stardom, and he has been active as a producer and public speaker. He is widely recognized both for his on-screen work and for his commentary on representation and the immigrant experience.
