Born: February 26, 1977, Kuching, Malaysia
Known for: Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring, Aquaman, Furious 7

James Wan is a Malaysian-born Australian film director, screenwriter and producer who became one of the most influential figures in modern horror cinema before expanding into major blockbuster filmmaking. He is best known for creating or launching several enduring horror franchises and for directing some of the highest-grossing films of the 2010s.

Early life

Wan was born on 26 February 1977 in Kuching, in the Malaysian state of Sarawak, and his family later moved to Australia, where he grew up. He studied film at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, where he met frequent collaborator Leigh Whannell. The two developed an interest in low-budget genre filmmaking that would shape the early part of Wan's career.

Career

Wan achieved a breakthrough in 2004 with Saw, a low-budget horror film he directed from a script co-written with Whannell. The film became a major commercial success and spawned a long-running franchise that helped define horror cinema in the 2000s. He continued working in the genre, and in 2010 he directed Insidious, another commercially successful supernatural horror film that launched a series.

In 2013 Wan directed The Conjuring, based on the case files of paranormal investigators, which became both a critical and commercial success and established the wider Conjuring Universe, one of the most profitable horror franchises in film history. As a director and producer, he has been central to a series of related films, helping to shape a distinctive style of atmospheric, suspense-driven horror.

Wan demonstrated his range beyond horror by directing Furious 7 in 2015, an entry in the Fast and Furious franchise that became one of the highest-grossing films of its year. He then directed Aquaman for the DC superhero franchise in 2018, which grossed over a billion dollars worldwide and ranks among the most commercially successful comic-book films.

Recent work

In addition to directing, Wan has built a significant career as a producer through his company Atomic Monster, backing numerous horror and genre projects across film and television. He returned to large-scale filmmaking with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the sequel to his earlier superhero hit, while continuing to develop and produce horror titles.

Wan's influence on contemporary horror is widely acknowledged, both for his individual films and for the franchises he has helped sustain. He is recognized for combining commercial instincts with craftsmanship in suspense and tension, and he remains an active director and producer whose work spans independent horror and major studio blockbusters.
