Ben Affleck
Actor, director & producer
Ben Affleck is an American actor, director, producer and screenwriter who has won two Academy Awards across a career spanning more than three decades. He first achieved widespread recognition as a writer and performer before establishing himself as a respected filmmaker, and he is regarded as one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Hollywood.
Early life
Benjamin Géza Affleck was born on August 15, 1972, in Berkeley, California, and grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He began acting as a child, appearing in small roles, and formed a close friendship with fellow Cambridge native Matt Damon. The two would go on to collaborate professionally, a partnership that became central to Affleck's early success. He attended college briefly before committing fully to acting.
Career
Affleck's breakthrough came with Good Will Hunting (1997), which he co-wrote with Matt Damon. The screenplay won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, bringing both men sudden prominence. Through the late 1990s and 2000s Affleck appeared in a range of films, including Armageddon, Shakespeare in Love, Pearl Harbor and Daredevil, becoming a major studio leading man.
After a period of mixed critical reception, Affleck reoriented his career toward directing. His directorial debut Gone Baby Gone (2007) was well received, and he followed it with The Town (2010), a Boston-set heist thriller in which he also starred. His third feature, Argo (2012), dramatised a covert operation to rescue American diplomats during the Iran hostage crisis; it won the Academy Award for Best Picture, with Affleck as a producer.
As an actor he delivered a widely praised performance in David Fincher's Gone Girl (2014). He went on to portray Batman in several DC Comics films, including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, becoming closely associated with the character for a period.
Recent work
Affleck has continued to balance acting and directing. He reunited with Matt Damon on Air (2023), which he directed and in which he starred, dramatising the creation of a landmark sportswear partnership. He and Damon also co-founded a production company aimed at giving filmmakers greater creative control. He has remained active in front of and behind the camera, taking on roles in studio features while developing directorial projects.
Throughout his career Affleck has been a consistent subject of media attention, both for his professional achievements and his personal life. He is widely regarded as a filmmaker whose strongest work draws on his roots in the Boston area, and his two Oscars, won in different decades and different categories, underscore the breadth of a career that has moved repeatedly between writing, acting, directing and producing.
