Professional basketball player

Born: August 7, 1989, Compton, California, United States
Known for: NBA All-Star, Toronto Raptors, Chicago Bulls, mid-range scoring

DeMar DeRozan is an American professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association, a multiple-time All-Star known for his prolific mid-range scoring and his longevity as one of the league's most consistent shooting guards and forwards.

Early life

DeRozan was born in Compton, California, and grew up in the Los Angeles area, becoming a celebrated high school basketball player. He went on to play college basketball at the University of Southern California, where he spent one season and established himself as a strong NBA prospect before declaring for the draft.

Career

DeRozan was selected in the first round of the NBA draft by the Toronto Raptors. He spent the early and defining years of his career in Toronto, where he developed into a franchise cornerstone and a perennial scoring leader. Alongside teammate Kyle Lowry, he helped transform the Raptors into a consistent playoff team and a fixture near the top of the Eastern Conference, becoming one of the most popular players in the franchise's history and a multiple-time All-Star selection.

He was later traded to the San Antonio Spurs, where he continued to produce at a high level while adding playmaking to his game. He then joined the Chicago Bulls, where he enjoyed a resurgent stretch, earning further All-Star recognition and All-NBA honors and gaining a reputation for late-game heroics with several memorable buzzer-beating shots. Throughout his career DeRozan has been noted for relying on a refined mid-range game and a polished footwork-based scoring style in an era increasingly dominated by three-point shooting, making him a distinctive offensive presence. He also represented the United States in international competition, winning a gold medal as part of the national team at the Summer Olympics, and he has climbed among the more prolific scorers of his generation in total career points.

Recent work

DeRozan has remained a productive veteran scorer, later joining the Sacramento Kings, and continues to rank among the league's reliable double-digit scorers well into the latter stage of his career. Off the court, he has been widely recognized for speaking openly about mental health, including his own experiences with depression, helping to spark broader conversations among professional athletes about emotional well-being and contributing to a shift in how leagues and players address the subject. He has also pursued interests outside basketball, including work in film production. Now one of the more experienced players in the league, he is respected both for his on-court consistency and durability and for his influence on how athletes discuss personal struggles, and he is frequently cited as an example of a scorer who has thrived without relying on the modern emphasis on the three-point shot.
