Valentino Rossi
Motorcycle & car racer
Valentino Rossi is an Italian professional motorcycle road racer and, more recently, a car racing driver, widely regarded as one of the most successful and influential figures in the history of the sport. A nine-time Grand Prix World Champion, he competed at the highest level of motorcycle racing for more than two decades and became known by the nickname "The Doctor" and his racing number 46.
Early life
Rossi was born on February 16, 1979, in Urbino, Italy, and grew up in nearby Tavullia. His father, Graziano Rossi, was himself a Grand Prix motorcycle racer, and Valentino was immersed in motorsport from an early age. He began competing in karting and minibike events as a child before progressing to motorcycle racing as a teenager, quickly showing the talent that would define his career.
Career
Rossi entered the Grand Prix world championship in the 1990s, winning titles in the smaller-displacement classes before moving up to the premier category. He won multiple world championships in the top class, competing for leading manufacturers and becoming the sport's defining personality during the 2000s. His rivalries with other champions, his showmanship and his charismatic celebrations helped expand the global popularity of MotoGP.
Across his career he amassed nine Grand Prix world titles spanning multiple categories, along with a large number of race victories and podium finishes that placed him among the most decorated riders in the sport's history. He raced for several factory teams over the years and remained competitive at the front of the grid long after many of his contemporaries had retired.
In addition to his racing, Rossi founded the VR46 Riding Academy to develop young Italian riders and established a racing team that competes in MotoGP and other categories. His "46" branding and Tavullia-based operations became a significant part of his enduring presence in the sport.
Recent work
Rossi retired from full-time MotoGP competition at the end of the 2021 season, closing one of the longest top-level careers in the sport. He subsequently moved into car racing, competing in GT endurance events and other four-wheeled championships, including sports car competition at the international level. Off the track he has continued to oversee his VR46 racing organization and rider academy, mentoring a new generation of Italian competitors who have advanced to MotoGP. His distinctive yellow number 46 branding, his Tavullia roots and his loyal global fan base have made him a lasting cultural figure beyond the sport, and he remains one of the most recognizable ambassadors for motorsport worldwide.
