Wayne Gretzky

Wayne Gretzky is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player and one of the most celebrated athletes in the sport's history. Nicknamed "The Great One," he is widely regarded as the greatest player in National Hockey League (NHL) history and holds the league's career records for goals, assists and points.

Early life

Gretzky was born on January 26, 1961, in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. He began skating as a young child and quickly stood out in local minor hockey, scoring at a pace that drew national attention while he was still a boy. His exceptional talent and hockey sense were apparent early, and he progressed rapidly through junior levels before turning professional as a teenager.

Career

Gretzky began his professional career in the World Hockey Association before joining the NHL with the Edmonton Oilers when the leagues merged. With the Oilers he became the centrepiece of a dominant team, leading them to four Stanley Cup championships during the 1980s. He won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league's most valuable player numerous times and repeatedly led the NHL in scoring, setting single-season records for goals, assists and points that have stood for decades.

In 1988 he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings, a move that reshaped his career and is credited with helping expand hockey's popularity in the United States, particularly in the Sun Belt. He later played for the St. Louis Blues and the New York Rangers before retiring in 1999. Over his career he amassed scoring totals far beyond those of any other player, and he remains the NHL's all-time leader in goals, assists and total points. He won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league's most valuable player a record number of times and led the league in scoring on numerous occasions, while holding or sharing dozens of individual NHL records, many of which remain unbroken.

Later career and legacy

Following his retirement, Gretzky was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, and the NHL retired his jersey number 99 across the entire league, an honour unique to him. He represented Canada in international competition as a player and later contributed to the national program in management roles, including involvement with Canada's Olympic teams. He has also held ownership and executive positions in professional hockey. Gretzky's records, longevity and influence on the growth of the game have cemented his standing as a defining figure in ice hockey, and "The Great One" remains a cultural icon in Canada and across the sport worldwide.
