He built a versatile screen career that includes the Magic Mike franchise, the 21 Jump Street comedies, and the Step Up series, and he has also worked as a producer on film and television projects.

Early life

Tatum was born in Cullman, Alabama, in 1980 and grew up in the southern United States, later spending part of his youth in Mississippi and Florida. As a young man he worked a variety of jobs and spent time as a dancer and model before moving into acting. His early experience as a performer informed the physical, movement-driven roles that would help launch his career.

Career

Tatum gained early attention in the mid-2000s, including a role in the dance film Step Up, which became a commercial success and spawned a franchise. He took on a range of parts in dramas and action films, building recognition through movies such as the war drama Stop-Loss and the sword-and-sandal film The Eagle.

A turning point came with the buddy-comedy 21 Jump Street and its sequel, opposite Jonah Hill, which showcased his comedic timing and broadened his appeal. He also drew critical praise for his dramatic work in Foxcatcher, the fact-based wrestling drama directed by Bennett Miller. In 2012 he co-created and starred in Magic Mike, loosely inspired by his own early experiences, which became a hit and led to sequels and a wider live-entertainment franchise.

Recent work

Tatum expanded into producing through his own production ventures, developing film and television projects. He directed and starred in the road-trip film Dog, and he continued to take on leading roles in studio films across genres, including action and romantic comedies. He reprised and expanded the Magic Mike brand with later installments and stage productions.

He has also moved into family-oriented and franchise filmmaking, taking part in major studio projects and voice work, and he has been involved in writing children's books. He lent his voice and presence to animated and ensemble features and continued to alternate between broad comedies, action vehicles, and more character-driven dramas, demonstrating a willingness to vary the scale and tone of his projects.

Off screen, Tatum has supported various charitable causes and has spoken about the demands of sustaining a long career in a changing film industry. He has used his production company to develop material for himself and other performers, taking a more active hand in shaping the projects he appears in. Over the course of his career he has been recognized as one of the more bankable leading men of his generation, noted for combining athletic physicality with comedic and dramatic range, and he remains an active presence in Hollywood as both performer and producer.
