Carles Puyol is a Spanish former professional footballer who spent his entire club career as a defender for FC Barcelona, where he served as captain for many years. Carles Puyol Saforcada was born on April 13, 1978, in La Pobla de Segur, in the province of Lleida, Catalonia, Spain. He came up through FC Barcelona's youth system after joining the club as a young player, developing in its academy before progressing to the senior squad.

Puyol made his first-team debut for FC Barcelona around the turn of the millennium and went on to become a defensive mainstay for well over a decade.
