Oleksandr Usyk

Oleksandr Usyk is a Ukrainian professional boxer widely regarded as one of the finest technical fighters of his generation. A southpaw celebrated for his footwork, ring intelligence and stamina, he became undisputed world champion in two weight classes, first at cruiserweight and later at heavyweight, a rare achievement in the modern era of multiple sanctioning bodies.

Early life

Usyk was born on 17 January 1987 in Simferopol, in what was then the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. He came to boxing relatively late compared with many champions, having first pursued football in his youth. He built a strong amateur career representing Ukraine and competed at the highest international level before turning professional.

Amateur and early professional career

As an amateur, Usyk won a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, competing in the heavyweight division. He also earned honours at the World and European amateur championships, establishing himself as one of the leading amateurs of his time. He turned professional in 2013 and moved quickly through the cruiserweight ranks, combining a high work rate with elusive defensive movement.

Career

Usyk rose to the top of the cruiserweight division and entered the World Boxing Super Series, a tournament designed to crown a single champion. He defeated a series of titleholders and won the tournament in 2018, unifying the major cruiserweight belts and being recognised as the undisputed champion of the division. He was awarded the Muhammad Ali Trophy for his triumph.

Seeking new challenges, Usyk moved up to heavyweight, boxing's marquee division. In September 2021 he defeated Anthony Joshua to capture multiple recognised world heavyweight titles, then retained them in a rematch in August 2022. These performances against a larger, naturally heavier opponent underlined his exceptional skill and conditioning.

The defining bout of his heavyweight career came in May 2024, when he faced Tyson Fury in a contest to determine the undisputed heavyweight champion. Usyk won the fight, becoming the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the four-belt era. He met Fury again later in 2024 and again emerged victorious, reinforcing his standing at the top of the division.

Recent years

Usyk has remained one of the most respected figures in world boxing, frequently appearing at or near the top of pound-for-pound rankings. Beyond the ring, he has been a prominent public figure in Ukraine, especially following the full-scale Russian invasion of his country in 2022, when he spoke about national resilience and lent his profile to humanitarian and morale-raising efforts. Known for his calm demeanour, sense of humour and disciplined approach, he is regarded as a sporting ambassador for Ukraine and one of the standout heavyweight champions of the twenty-first century.
