Edwin van der Sar

Edwin van der Sar is a Dutch former professional footballer who is widely regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers of his generation. Over a long career he won major domestic and European honours with clubs in the Netherlands, Italy and England, and he was a long-serving member of the Netherlands national team. After retiring he moved into football administration, taking on executive roles in club management.

Early life

Van der Sar was born on October 29, 1970, in Voorhout, in the Netherlands. He came up through Dutch youth football and developed as a goalkeeper before joining the academy system of Ajax, the Amsterdam club where he would establish himself as a top-level professional. His tall frame, composure and skill with the ball at his feet became defining traits of his style, suited to the possession-oriented Dutch footballing tradition.

Career

Van der Sar made his name at Ajax, where he won multiple Eredivisie titles and helped the club win the UEFA Champions League in the mid-1990s. He later moved abroad, playing for Juventus in Italy before transferring to English football, first with Fulham and then with Manchester United. At Manchester United he enjoyed a highly successful spell, winning several Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League, with his penalty shoot-out save in the 2008 final against Chelsea sealing the trophy. For the Netherlands national team he earned a large number of caps over more than a decade, representing his country at multiple major international tournaments and serving for a time as captain.

Recent work

After retiring from playing, van der Sar transitioned into football administration. He returned to Ajax in an executive capacity, eventually serving as the club's chief executive officer, a role in which he oversaw business and football operations during a period that included domestic titles and a run to a major European final for the club. The move reflected a path taken by a number of former players who remain in the game through management rather than coaching, and his tenure was generally regarded as a successful chapter in the club's modern history.

Van der Sar later stepped down from his executive role at Ajax. Throughout his career he was noted not only for his shot-stopping but also for his comfort with the ball at his feet, a quality that suited the sweeper-keeper style that became more common in the modern game and that some observers credit him with helping to popularize. His longevity allowed him to play at the highest level into his late thirties.
